Transactional vs. Non-Transactional Methods
The Space domain offers two methods for managing space inventory and personnel:
- a method that is based on workspace transactions and requires a license to the Archibus Service Desk or Moves applications. This method records changes to room assignments (such as changes to employee assignment, department assignment, type, and category) as a series of Workspace Transactions records. Space changes recorded in Workspace Transactions can result from space reassignments as well as from departmental requests to claim space, group moves, and individual moves. This method enables you to track changes over time.
- an inventory method that is not based on workspace transactions and does not track changes over time. With the non-transactional method, you create a space inventory of rooms, groups, or both, as well as track the personnel occupying these rooms and charge departments for the space that they use. With this method, you do not track space changes over time with workspace transactions.
Your can choose between the non-transactional method and the transaction-based method. You can also start with the non-transaction method to initially develop the inventory and then refine the inventory by adding transactions.
The two methods share some tasks, and have their own specific tasks as well. Accordingly, as you work through the online help topics, you will find that some topics are specific to a particular method, while other topics pertain to both methods.
Note:The transaction-based space inventory method is not available in the Archibus SaaS Space module.

Setting the Method for your Site
Archibus ships with the Workspace Transactions feature turned off. This means that:
- The product does not record transactions on changes to rooms and room assignments.
- You do not need the Moves application or the Service Desk application to perform Space functions.
- The system displays the non-transactional Navigator and its views and reports.
If you want to work with the workspace transaction features, you must enable these features. Enabling the workspace transaction features:
- Turns on the data change events that track transactions as you edit rooms and employees in the Smart Client, the Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit, and in Web Central.
- Turns on the integrated forms for working with room categories, types, standards, moves, and service requests all in one place.
- Enables the integrations of Workspace Transactions with the Moves and Service Desk applications.
- Displays the transaction-based Navigator.
Set the program to the appropriate method using the System / Archibus Administrator - Application Configuration / Enable Workspace Transactions task.
