Asset Symbol Creation: What Happens in the Database

Creating New Asset Symbols: Room Example illustrated how to create a room asset symbol in the Archibus Smart Client Extension for AutoCAD by connecting a polyline located on the Room prototype layer (RM) to a record in the Rooms table.

Now, take a closer look at what happens in the database when you create asset symbols.

When you create an asset symbol, the Extension for AutoCAD does the following in the database:

• Create a record for the given primary key if a record with this key does not already exist.  If a record with this key does exist, they link to that record and update its data.
• For all types of asset symbols, the Extension for AutoCAD completes the following fields in the record with information from the linked asset symbol:

• Drawing Name
• Drawing Layer
• Entity Handle

• For asset symbols representing areas, such as rooms, gross areas, and suites, the programs measure the polyline and complete the record’s Area field.
