layer

In a CAD drawing, a mechanism for organizing data and entities. Layers are similar to perfectly aligned sheets of transparent paper, each containing one type of data or drawing item, that are placed on top of each other to form a complete drawing; lifting off one sheet of transparent paper removes the items on that paper from the drawing. Archibus uses layers to hold each type of item in a facility drawing, and each layer is uniquely named to indicate the type of data it holds. See also asset layer.
