Tips for Defining Index Codes and Index Names

You must enter an Index Code and Name for an index when entering it into the system using the Define Indexes task. It is important that these names be unique, and clearly identify the index. The following topic provides some suggestions for entering values for Index Codes and Index Names, so that they easily identify and clearly distinguish the indexes you use.

The Index Code is an alpha-numerical code used for quick identification of the index. The acronym for the index, including the region and time aggregation for the data, where applicable, is commonly included in the Index Code.

For example:

Suggested Index Code Used for...
HICP – FR Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices – France
CPIU- US-M Consumer Price Index – All Urban Consumers, Monthly
CPIU-US-Y Consumer Price Index – All Urban Consumers, Yearly
CPIU-US-HY Consumer Price Index – All Urban Consumers, Half Year Averages

The Index Code you enter is used throughout the system to identify the index, so it is best to use the official code, or use the following best practices for naming:

Index Name

The Index Name further identifies the index. It is best to use either the name specified in the Lease Agreement, or the official name used by the issuing authority.
