Indirect Emissions - Scope 3: Overview
Scope 3 indirect emissions include all indirect activities not included in Scope 2, such as emissions from the extraction and production of purchased material and fuels, transportation-related activities in vehicles that you do not own or control (such as employee commuting and business travel), outsourced activities, recycling of used products, and waste disposal.
Scope 3 emissions are calculated form activity data, such as passenger miles, purchasing and sales records, and recycling invoices, using the factors data your business process owner entered using the Carbon Footprint - Background Data tasks.
Scope 3 emissions capture emissions from the employee activities and processes associated with the building. The World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Green House Gas Protocol considers the quantification of Scope 3 emissions as optional when preparing an overall corporate Green House Gas inventory. However, these emissions might be a significant contributor to your overall emissions, and might represent mission-critical activities. Including Scope 3 Indirect Emissions provides a more complete picture of a building's carbon footprint.
