Changing the Placement of Allocations within a Stack

While working with a stack plan, you may want to change the position of a stack element (allocation) on a floor's stack bar to visualize the affinity between groups on a floor.

For example, suppose it is important that the Reception and Human Resources groups be located near one another on the floor so that a perspective employees can be greeted in Reception and easily travel to Human Resources for an interview. In the stack plan, you can place the Reception and Human Resources allocations next to each other to remind you that these groups must be located next to each other on the actual floor.

You can change the position of a stack element on a floor's stack bar by dragging and dropping the group to a different location within the same stack bar. This action does not edit any values for the allocation, except its internal Sort Order (gp.sort_order) value, which determines its position in a floor's stack bar.

Example

Suppose in a research facility, you want the Biology and Nanotechnology groups to be located near one another one the floor to facilitate communication and share resources. You can model this on the stack plan by placing the BIO and NANO allocations next to each other.

Select the NANO allocation and drag it to the right of the BIO allocation, placing it on top of the existing NGIS allocation.

When you release the mouse, the system drops the NANO allocation to the right of BIO, and adjusts the locations of the rest of the allocations within the floor's stack bar.

Procedure

To change the placement of an allocation within a stack:

  1. Set the As Of date to match the Date Start of the allocation whose position you want to change.
  2. Select the allocation and the system outlines it in black.
  3. Drag the allocation to the right of the allocation at which you want to place it and release the mouse to drop it.
  4. The system redraws the stack to place the allocation in the specified location and adjusts the stack by moving the other allocations accordingly.
