Service Area (Concept)
Tracking service area is useful for locating all the non-occupiable space on a floor such as primary circulation (hallways, corridors, lobbies), and building service areas (mechanical rooms, janitor closets, bathrooms).
You might designate some service area as occupiable depending on your reporting goals and your assessment of how easily the space could be reconfigured to house personnel. See Occupiable/Non-Occupiable Rooms.
How to Measure
Service area is measured to the center of all interior walls except in the following cases:
- When a vertical penetration area adjoins a service area, the area of the wall is included in the vertical penetration area.
- When a service area adjoins usable area, the area of the wall is included in the service area.
- When the external wall adjoins a service area, the service area is measured to the inside finished surface of the dominant portion of the external wall.
