Archibus Extensions for BUILDERTM SMS
Overview
This topic overviews:
- BUILDER™ SMS, an asset management platform developed for US Department of Defense agencies.
- Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS, Archibus tools developed to enable communication between BUILDER™ SMS and Archibus.
What is BUILDER™ SMS?
BUILDER™ SMS is a cloud-based facilities management software system, developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It allows facilities managers and senior leadership to develop long-term planning and funding strategies for their portfolio of building assets and equipment.
BUILDER™ SMS capabilities include:
- Inventory – Building systems and components inventory, based on UNIFORMAT II categories
- Inspections – Distress surveys, direct ratings, and age-based assessments
- Work Plans – Long-range facilities planning and budgets
- Field assessment – To include mobile data entry and synchronization
Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS
Archibus developed a set of connectors, Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS, to enable two-way communication between Archibus and BUILDER™ SMS for asset managers who use both systems. These connectors enable bidirectional data transfer between the two platforms. Two scenarios illustrate:
- Export Archibus asset inventory data to BUILDER™ SMS, analyze data in BUILDER™ SMS, then import results of the analysis for reporting in Archibus.
- Import BUILDER™ SMS asset inventory data into Archibus, analyze the data in Archibus, then export results of the analysis, for use in BUILDER™ SMS.
One-Way and Round-Trip Data Transfers
Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS incorporate a common language in background data tables. For instance, the extensions translate condition statuses between the two platforms. You can conduct field assessments in Archibus, then analyze the data and formulate estimates in BUILDER™ SMS. If you save these results back to Archibus, field assessment data are available for reports and planning in both environments.
Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS are agency agnostic, as each agency has its own requirements for asset tracking, condition reports, and maintenance estimates. One-way export or import operations typically do not call for customization, but round-trip analysis and reporting operations do.
Connector Capabilities and Data Requirements
Data quality is critical for the success of any inventory and reporting system. Moreover, organizations typically employ several systems to manage their diverse assets. In line with the need to maintain high quality data in a complex software environment, Archibus:
- Collects and reconciles multiple systems of record, for use in BUILDER™ SMS.
- Collects all asset information, funnels it to BUILDER™ SMS, returns it to Archibus, performs analyses, and runs reports.
- Distributes processed information to other systems.
Once you configure and deploy Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS to accommodate BUILDER™ SMS requirements, you can readily transfer multiple types of data between the two platforms.
System Requirements
BUILDER™ SMS is produced and maintained by the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) of the US Army Corp of Engineers (USAC), which retains all rights to the product. End user organizations using Archibus to integrate their own data between their own licensed copy of BUILDER™ SMS and their licensed copy of Archibus are required to comply with the EULA and the licensed terms for the use of BUILDER™ SMS, including any limits on size of facility managed by BUILDER™ SMS.
Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS are designed and tested only against BUILDER™ SMS version 3.3.6.17. CERL makes updates and changes to the program on its own schedule, and makes no statement about compatibility between versions. Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS may need adjustments to support other versions.
Help Topics
Help topics for Archibus Extensions for BUILDER™ SMS focus on explaining how to use the Archibus connectors to exchange asset inventory data between Archibus and BUILDER™ SMS; the topics assume familiarity with the asset inventory systems used in the two platforms.
