Draw Room Areas

If you want a room inventory that includes room plans, a CAD specialist must add room asset symbols to the floor plan drawing.

Rooms are represented on the Room (RM) asset layer and are registered in the Rooms (RM) table.

Each room can be assigned a standard (from the Room Standards table) such as OFF-A, WKSTA-B, or LAB-2. Additionally, each room can be assigned a room category (such as SUPPORT) and a room type (such as TRAINING). Rooms can also be assigned for use by a particular division, or department within a division.

Typically, someone at your site will have already defined the divisions, departments, room standards, room types, and room categories so that you can choose from these values when classifying the room.

Note: Vertical penetration areas and service areas are drawn on the Rooms layer and stored in the Rooms database table. You can tell that these areas are not traditional rooms - but are service areas and vertical penetrations -- because they have a Room Category of VERT or SERV.

Note: If you intend to work with the team space features, you can polyline areas that contain multiple seats or rooms. You can then register this area as one room. See Team Space Floor Plans and Open Plans and Workstations.

Note: If you are using Revit, see BIM Execution Plan for Space Inventory (Revit).

Procedure

Prerequisite: Develop a floor plan drawing with gross areas. See Draw Gross Areas. Optionally, add your vertical penetration and service areas. See Draw Vertical Penetrations and Draw Service Areas.

  1. If you are working in Smart Client and CAD is not active, select the Draw Room Areas task. The task presents the Drawing List so that you can choose a drawing to work on. Choose the drawing, and Archibus loads your CAD tool, displays the selected drawing, and makes CAD the active application.
  2. In CAD, open a drawing (if necessary).
  3. Set you snap and grid as necessary. The CAD Navigator includes these commands for your convenience.
  4. Prepare the drawing for working with room areas by choosing Set Rooms on the Navigator.
  5. Depict the floor's room areas by drawing rectangles and polylines. See Drawing Boundaries Accurately.
  6. Data edit or data number the polylines, which converts them to asset symbols. For more information on developing Archibus asset symbols, see: Asset Symbols: Overview.
  7. Optional: Assign the room to a division and department by using the data edit features. There are a few options
    1. If your site manages all department assignments through space requests, you can leave the Division Code and Department Code fields blank. When the space request is approved and a room is assigned to a division and department, the system will complete the Division Code and Department Code fields. For more information, see Space Requests. Or, you may wish to assign a division and department now, and then use the space request process to manage changes.
    2. If this room is used by a single department, complete the Division Code and Department Code fields with the department using this room.
    • If this room is used by multiple departments, and you plan to charge the departments for the use of this room, change the room's Prorate field from NONE to an appropriate value. For information, see Space Chargeback / Designating Common Room Areas.

Note: While in CAD working with the Edit Data command, you can enter basic information about the room. Once you finish in CAD, you can enter additional information about the room using Web Central or Smart Client. If you are creating open plan workstation rooms-- for example, one open plan workstation holding three seats -- be sure to enter the Capacity of this room so that you can arrive at the overall capacity of the floor.

  1. From the Archibus Smart Client Extension for AutoCAD, you can run the Highlight by Owner commands to highlight room asset symbols according to ownership, such as highlighting rooms according to their department assignment. For your convenience, typical criteria by which you may want to highlight are listed on the Navigator. You can also design your own highlights; see Highlight by Owner Commands.
  2. So that your room plan can be viewed using Archibus Web Central or mobile, publish your drawing as an Archibus Enterprise Graphic file by running your CAD program's Publish Enterprise Graphics command, which is located on the Navigator for your convenience.

Note: If you are working with Revit 3D models and are working with a non-transactional space inventory, you can publish your plans as 3D enterprise graphics so that you can view them in the 3D Navigator, which is available from the Space Console..

  1. A Smart Client or Web Central user will need to run the Update Area Totals action, which calculates area and data.
  2. If you like, view your room plans in reports by accessing Smart Client or Web Central and running the Highlight Rooms by... reports.
