A rule or directive made and maintained by an authority. Governmental regulations, also called rules, specify mandatory requirements that must be met under specific laws. These may address health, product safety, operator safety, environmental effects, quarantine requirements, consumer protection, packaging and labeling product characteristics, or other matters in the public interest. A regulation may consist of agency-developed technical specifications or requirements, or it may permit use of particular private sector standards as a means of compliance. Regulations are stored in the Regulations (regulation) table.

For example, for an Asbestos regulation, you can have the following compliance programs that manage the regulation. Each compliance program, in turn, can have requirements, such as Supervisor license compliance program having a certification exam requirement. You can model the regulations to the level of detail appropriate for you organization. For example, in the below hierarchy, the AIR TESTING and AHERA NOTIFICATION compliance programs do not have requirements.

If you work with the Compliance application's contract management feature, you can assign contracts (which in turn have contract terms) to regulations. The Regulation -Contract-Contract Term hierarchy uses the same tables as the Regulation-Compliance Program-Requirement hierarchy: that is, the Regulations table, the Compliance Programs and Contracts (regprogram) table, and the Requirements (regrequirement) table.
