Telecom Area Level and Service Type

Two concepts bear particular importance in your connection inventory: telecom area level and telecom service type.

Telecom Area Level

Telecom area level distinguishes between assets in the work area and assets in the telecom area. Assets in the work area include personal computers, printers, and telephones. Assets in the telecom area include patch panels, servers, and network switches.

Since equipment can be both at the workstation and telecom area level, the Equipment table provides the Telecom Area Level field and Equipment Standards table provides the Standard Telecom Area Level field so that you can specify the telecom area for equipment devices. For example, you can set a workstation item or a workstation standard to "work area" and a server or standard describing a server to "telecom area."

Telecom Service Type

Telecom service type designates whether equipment and network connections handle voice or data transmissions. Service types also include Video, Security, Environmental, and HVAC data. Typically connections in a telecom inventory handle either Voice or Data.
